Game Dev Tycoon is a fun single-player simulation game where you develop and release new games. This title by Greenheart Games was released back in 2012. The story of Game Dev Tycoon starts in a garage in the 80s where you sit on your computer making new titles with limited technologies and resources on hand. As you start releasing more and more titles you unlock more options and earn more resources to create better games. And gradually you upgrade your workspace from a garage to an office and also hire more employees.
In this article, I will give you some tips and tricks on Game Dev Tycoon that will help you progress swiftly through the game.
Tips for Game Dev Tycoon
1. Game Combinations
The first thing to keep in mind before making a game is to find a good combination. In order for your game to earn a reasonable amount of profit, you will need a good combination of Genre, Topic, Audience, and Gaming System. When starting out you can just go with the combinations that you know will do well, for example, Prison/Action is a good combination.
Now, to know that you have a good combination look at the ‘+’ signs under the gaming system. ‘+++’ is the best combination so at least try and get a combination that has ‘++’.

2. Stop Continuous Production
When you develop and release the first game, don’t just forget about it and start working on another game. You might think the more games you make the more money you will earn but that is not true. In-Game Dev Tycoon quality is more important than quantity. So, after you are done releasing a game wait for the game reports and reviews to arrive. Then analyze the reports and reviews and try to understand what changes or additions should be made to make better games in the future.
3. Accept Contracts
There are other ways to earn money after you have progressed to a certain point in the game. This extra income becomes really necessary given the increasing monthly costs in the game. These are called contracts. They pay you a good amount of money upon finishing the task. It’s always a good idea to accept the contracts. However, it’s worth noting that there’s also a risk involved when accepting contracts which is, that you receive a penalty charge if you can’t complete the task in the given time. So, I’ll recommend taking contracts of small amounts at the beginning.

4. Research
At the beginning of the game, there are only a limited number of options, as in-game types, to choose from. It goes without saying that you will need more of these options to progress in the game. The only way you unlock more options is by researching. It is probably one of the most important things to do in the game. By unlocking more game options, the chance of making a better game combination increases and you can make an overall better game.
5. Keep a Balance
Just like most games, it’s always recommended to keep a balance among all the aspects rather than making one aspect strong and leaving others weak. This is even more important in Game Dev Tycoon because a balanced game is most likely to make more profits. So, make sure you have a balance between tech and design employees. It’s preferable to have 2 Full Design, 2 Full Tech, and 2 balanced employees. Also, try to balance out your own character as much as possible.

6. Get Your License
When starting out you only receive two consoles to release your games on. While you might think you can stick with these consoles for as long as you like but sooner or later new consoles will start to roll out and the older ones will start to become obsolete. So, to keep making a profit get the license of the new consoles as soon as they roll out. Download Game Dev Tycoon for Android on Google Play and for iOS on App Store.
