Ever wondered why the chicken crossed the road? If this question has occupied your thoughts, Hipster Whale’s action game, “Crossy Road,” will help you come closer to finding an answer. Crossy Road is a simple, fun, and easy-to-play endless action game, where you take control of a chicken, and cross roads, rivers, and rain tracks filled with obstacles, to reach the other side of the road. What answers lie ahead on the other end of the road? Let’s find out in this review of Crossy Road.
The Gameplay
Crossy Road comes with a simple, fun, and innovative gameplay, wherein you get to control a chicken with the aim of crossing roads, rivers, and rain tracks, and surviving the numerous obstacles, while the world endlessly scrolls behind you. The scoring of this game is based on how far you can go without getting stopped by the obstacles, and you get only one life to play with. The obstacles are also varied and include roads with moving traffic, tracks with fast trains, fast-moving rapids, and a hungry eagle looking for prey.

Though you begin the game as a chicken, as you make progress, you get to collect over 150 pop art and retro-styled characters to play with. The characters include ducks, horses, dogs, wolves, elves, robots, and many other unique characters to choose from. Crossy Road has a simple concept surrounding its gameplay, but it is the overall structure, feel, and detailing that makes the gaming experience stand out.
The Controls
Controls to this game are as simple as it gets and comprises of taps and swipes to control the character as it navigates along with the endless world. Tapping on the screen makes the character go forward while swiping in the desired direction makes the character move towards the said area. It can also be played in any orientation, which is an added bonus making it a highly adaptable game.

The Graphics
Crossy Road’s graphics carry with them a retro feel, as the entire elements of the endless world are made up of squares. As such, everything from the characters to the obstacles to the other graphical elements is built with tiny squares. Despite this retro feel, everything is unmistakably modern and is crisp, clear, and pleasant to look at, and the inclusion of vibrant colors makes everything pop out. All in all, the graphic experience is pretty smooth, and the character animations that play out after encountering an obstacle is also well portrayed and fun to look at.
In Conclusion
Crossy Roads, no doubt presents itself as a simple, fun, and hassle-free endless action game. And though this has become the norm for mobile games, it still manages to stand out from the rest, owing to the amount of work that has been put into it.

From the well-illustrated and vibrant characters to the smooth graphics and animations coupled with the super simple gameplay, the game manages to nail the basics of how to be a fun-filled game. In my time with the game, I found it to be quite addictive and fun at the same time, and I feel other players will also share the same sentiment. This game is definitely worth giving a try and is available to download for free at the Google Playstore and App Store.
