COLOPL inc has launched a new game with a vibrant world and equally vibrant inhabitants. The premise is simple, collect fantasy beasts and fight with characters that you collect. It is similar to Pokemon in concept and to Genshin Impact in terms of appearance. But despite the familiarity with other popular franchises a new game can get overwhelming. This beginner’s guide aims to ease a fledgling player into the world of Volzerk.

Completing Quests
While this may seem obvious, it is one of the crucial things to keep in mind. A lot of the content needs to be unlocked by playing the story missions. They not only provide lore for the world but also give key resources that allow players to upgrade their characters and the Mou-Mons they collect through the game. There are different types of quests. Main episode quests are the main story missions. The story is broken up into episodes. To fully unlock the game you have to complete the first episode, so if you want to build a strong party you have to clear those. The Ranger quests are there to increase you Ranger Rank which indicates the overall progress of the player. These quests are mostly completed through expeditions. They give rewards which increase progressively with rank.

The Mou-Mons of Volzerk
The fictional beasts unique to Volzerk are naturally its key elements. Understanding them means understanding the game and their role in it. The player rides atop them and defeats enemies together. The Mou-Mons are upgraded through training and initiation of hearts.
Training: This is a passive process. Simply add up to 6 Mou-mons at a time to the Training queue and they will get levelled up. Mou-mons of a higher rarity have a higher level cap and hence take longer to level up.
Initiation of Hearts: Initiation of hearts is a feature to further enhance a Mou-Mon. This is entirely dependent on the characters. Rarer and better characters mean better bonuses. The bonuses are further dependent on the rarity of the heart which is randomly assigned when the Mou-Mon is obtained. It is structured from S to D with S being the highest and D the lowest. S-ranked hearts receive the best stats while D the worst.
The Mou-Mons can be obtained in multiple ways. Expeditions and for that matter, any mission that involves fighting other Mou-Mons gives players the chance to pair with the one they have defeated. Obtained Mou-Mons can then be traded for gold or one can be crossbred with other Mou-Mons of the opposite sex to get a stronger Mou-Mon with stats inherited from the parents. These second generations can be further upgraded but requires completion of specific episodes.

CrossBreeding Mou-Mons in Volzerk
This is one of the most important game mechanics. Chances are the Mou-Mons you pair with or collect in the beginning will be lacking. They may not match the weapon types, perhaps you want a fire elemental, maybe the hearts are of a lesser rarity or you may simply be tired of having weak Mou-Mons. This is where crossbreeding comes to play. By combining Mou-Mons with desirable traits you have a guarantee to get an offspring far better than its parents. These offspring too can be further crossbred to get even stronger and rarer Mou-Mons once you unlock the ability. This allows for the player to attain higher rarity and strong monsters at an early level.

Going on expeditions
The world of Volzerk is vibrant and full of life. From the open grasslands to the ancient ruins, there is something to be found. But as a player they serve a simpler purpose to collect resources. There are randomized loot and the Mou-Mons themselves serve as resources. When breeding is unlocked after Episode 1, it gives the players freedom and ability to mix and match the Mou-Mons they own and get the ones they need. They give the players coins which are needed to fund the various upgrades required to strengthen the party.
A subcategory of expeditions are ruins which are in essence dungeons that are there for the player to explore. These ruins must be discovered before accessing them from the open world. They require expedition points to enter. Exploring the major regions such as Windblume Plain gives the player expedition points. A special reward granted by ruins are eggs which hatch into Mou-Mons, thus providing another means to acquire them. As before these Mou-Mons can be used the way the player wants to use them, then can be traded, crossbred or simply kept.

Volzerk is a game with great promise. Currently, players may find difficulty understanding the game due to it being made by foreign developers, however, the current errors in translation and localization to English are sure to be patched. There are certain concerning things related to the characters as it requires real money to purchase characters 3-star and above. Hopefully these characters will be made more accessible. The Mou-Mons are the centerpiece and are capable of carrying the attention of the player. This is a game worth looking out for.
