After the excitement of experiencing Ancient Egypt in the first of the recent Assassin’s Creed trilogy on consoles, it has awoken a thirst from gamers for titles themed around Egypt. Curse of the Pharaohs attracted attention from the industry leaders like IGN because of its depiction of the era and the characters within; it is the perfect example of how a game can offer an immersive experience.
The story is compelling and detailed, the combat in the game is challenging and, it looks the part too. When you think of Egypt, it instantly evokes imagery of the pyramids, Tutankhamun, and the River Nile; it’s an excellent setting for a game because things are immediately recognizable and the player already has them in their mind. It is one of the main reasons why so many use the African country as their backdrop for their titles. Sphinx And The Cursed Mummy is a 3D platformer that utilizes the imagery of the time with a different spin, as the lead character is allied with The Mummy to solve various puzzles. You can also find Egypt-themed online slots on Foxy Bingo, including Egyptian Emeralds and Mistress of Egypt which lean heavily on the same themes. There’s also Age of Mythology on PC which allows players to build their own temples and become the son of Osiris to lead their people to victory. While these three titles all use recognizable landmarks, they’re not the most immersive of games, so let’s look at the ones which do offer more of a rounded experience, just as Assassin’s Creed Origins.
Tap Tap Civilization: Idle City Building Game
This title, available on Android and iOS, gives the player the task of building a new civilization in the desert and creating everything you need to help its inhabitants survive and thrive. Starting with a humble camel tent, you will progress through creating a village before the villagers develop the skills to build massive iconic structures like the pyramids and the sphinx.
Mummy Shooter
This title from Blue Shark Games brings the action to the mobile platform in a first-person shooter. You take on armies of mummies, skeletons, and other cursed enemies under the ceiling of the pyramids. As you search for treasure, the game throws increasingly difficult hordes of enemies all in your direction to stop you from taking the spoils. The sound in the game adds to the atmosphere here, with visuals worthy of console gaming.
Inside the Pyramid: The Tomb Of The Pharaoh
This action-packed platformer looks like a game fresh out of the 1990s; it’s got a charm not unlike the NES version of Super Mario Bros but with an Egyptian twist. This title does really well because it doesn’t lean on having the best graphics; it makes up for it in the gameplay and the experience overall. You control Susan, who is heading to the pyramids to access the secret chamber within and unearth the tomb of the Pharaoh’s mummy. It has classic platform game tropes, with hidden passageways within walls, manic moments where you have to jump chasms, dodge enemies, and more. It’s a good mobile experience.
