The free game Pokémon Unite delivered by The Pokémon Company & Nintendo by developer Timi Studios takes Pokémon combat in an innovative way. Instead of collecting Pokémon friends, wandering around the area, and fighting Jim Challenges and opponent NPCs, two teams with five players each combat it out in the field. The capacity to communicate and compete with other Pokémon enthusiasts is a nice break from previous Pokémon games that had restrictions on multiplayer choices, “Pokémon Unite” suffers from limiting gameplay, disturbing microtransactions, and battle rules that favor those who spend money on the game.

Background

The Aeos Islands are the backdrop for Pokémon Unite. Professor Phorus, a Pokémon professor who found and equipped Aeos Energy, is under the examination of that area, as is the case with other Pokémon territories. With the help of this, you can restore evolved Pokémon to their base forms and can only see them in the Aeos Islands. All Pokémon on the Aeos Islands have fewer Aeos energy, and by knocking them out during combat, the pokemon get strengthened. Professor Phorus co-founded the Unite Battles with her research colleague Erbie, and each fight uses Aeos Energy as a scoring system.

Basics

While the lore employed in the Pokémon Unite tutorial supports the region, it appears to serve little function until you get into the main action. Players can create an avatar with a limited character creator, similar to Pokémon GO. When starting up their game, players will also have the option of selecting one Pokémon Unite License. These are what allow users to use the 20 Pokémon in Pokémon Unite right now. There are currently five different Battle Types to choose from, each with its own set of benefits. Attackers, such as Pikachu, cause a lot of destruction but have low resistance, whereas Drivers, such as Talonflame, can move quickly and cause a lot of destruction.

Gameplay

If the player prefers an evolution like Charizard or Ninetails upon starting a Pokémon Unite match, it will change to its original form. Players will generate onto the pitch beside their team in a 5-on-5 rivalry. Using Aeos Energy gained from vanquished opponents, each team has many scoring opportunities. Aeos Energy can be obtained by beating AI Pokémon that appear in the arena or eliminating a member of the opposing side. The player’s Pokémon can evolve as the game advances, opening new timed movements that can be activated using the Nintendo Switch’s bumpers. During a match, Legendary AI Pokémon will spawn in a specific place on most maps.

The winning Pokémon Unite team receives extra rewards for defeating this Pokémon, such as the chance to score points faster. Taking challenges, however, can be perilous if players are knocked unconscious by AI Pokémon or a member of the opposing side, as they would miss all of their Aeos Energy. The opposing team can then steal it and utilize it.

Overview & Hollowear

Disappointing?

While the bouts are brief to understand easily, Pokémon Unite suffers from several flaws that make it a tedious game. Pokémon Unite, like several other free-to-play games, mainly relies on microtransactions. The in-game currency is needed to purchase new Unite Licenses, trainer costumes, battle gear, and Pokémon attire. While the 14-day login reward system or fulfilling daily event goals can gain you certain things and licenses, the options are limited and take a long time. Aeos Coins, Aeos Tickets, and Aeos Gems are the three main currencies in Pokémon Unite. Events and daily assignments help to earn coins. As a result, people who want to buy a definite Pokémon’s license must either use the coins required for the Unite License or purchase gems to bypass the waiting time.

Conclusion

Pokémon Unite could have been a more fun experience for gamers if there’s an advancement in earning currency and the item level system was related to using in combat rather than bought upgrades. Pokémon Unite is now launched for Nintendo Switch, with a mobile version on iOS and Android scheduled for September 21, 2021.
