Welcome to our OSRS 1-99 Magic Skilling Guide! Magic is one of many skills to be trained within the game, and we’re here to break down the steps of how to do so. This skill is one of the most useful in-game. It offers users many combat options, how to utilize their skills to increase their bank, and how to harness one of the best modes of transport in the game, teleporting. You can cast teleportation spells to decrease your travel time throughout Gielinor drastically. To put it plainly, the Magic skill opens many doors for players.
There isn’t just one way to train Magic in Runescape either; there are a few methods players can choose from. If you find yourself unsure of which method best suits you, we recommend multiple accounts to train the various techniques and find your niche.
What You’ll Need To Know
Quests
Especially early on in the game, quests can help you build up some Magic XP. There is a fair chance they may not hold much significance on your journey to 99, but they will undoubtedly provide a helping hand to get you started.
Free-To-Play
- Witch’s Potion
- Imp Catcher
Both of these quests are good starting points for those playing in free-to-play mode. This is because these quests have no requirements and offer Magic XP.
Pay-To-Play
- Fairy Tale I
- Growing Pains
These are two great options for pay-to-play members to kick off their OSRS journey.
Runes
Runes are needed for every spell you cast in OSRS, meaning you’re going to need to purchase many of these runes in order to cast your way to 99, thousands in fact, which is why many users choose to buy OSRS gold to speed up the process. Although players can obtain runes via drops, they may be waiting around a while to acquire enough to reach 99.
You can avoid these purchases and waiting games if you can get your hands on an elemental stave; this means whichever Staff you have, for instance, the Staff of Earth, means you will no longer need Earth runes to cast a spell where they are required.
Levels 1-54
Combat Spells
When starting to train Magic, these are essentially all you will have available aside from questing. You will need Mind Runes and Air Runes; each can be purchased for a small amount of GP. You can later unlock Water, Earth, or Fire; when you do so, it is recommended you switch to those to speed up your training process.
Free-to-play members can use Wind Strike to attack Chickens and Cows in Lumbridge, whereas Pay-to-play can aim their attacks at Sad Crabs on Hosidius or Rock Crabs on Rellekka.
Upon reaching level 17 Magic, switch to Wind Bolt and work through the Bolt spells as they unlock; note that these spells require Chaos Runes, which are more expensive than their counterparts. However, this is still a cheap alternative in training Magic.
Splash Spells are an excellent alternative to violence, as they allow you to cast a spell and deal no damage. Using Splash spells is a good method for those players short on time; this is because this method can be carried out AFK, but there are some things you’ll need to do first:
Negative Magic bonus armor is needed for this, so using something such as full helms or platebodies should suffice. Keep in mind that you should be aiming for a magic bonus of -64 overall. You will also be required to swap out your elemental staff for a more effective melee weapon. Once you have equipped yourself, remember that now without your staff, every spell you cast will come with a cost for runes. Because of the need to pay for runes using this method, we recommend using Wind Bolt and other such wind spells. All that is left to do now is to locate an NPC. You can then carry out these spells on said NPC, generating Magic XP without lifting a finger.
Jewelry Enchantment
From level 7 onwards, players are able to enchant Sapphire jewelry. A level one enchantment on a Sapphire necklace will offer you not only a reasonable XP/hr rate, but it allows players to generate a small income; this is because enchanted jewelry can turn a profit.
At level 27, you will unlock the level two enchant. This can then be cast on emerald rings, and you can gain a steady Xp/hr rate, additionally being able to make another income like with sapphire jewelry.
At level 49, you gain access to level three enchant, which is to be used on ruby jewelry.
Bolt Enchantment
This is a method exclusively for pay-to-play members with a lot of cash to spare. If you fit the criteria, why not give it a go! The first enchantment spell becomes available at level four; once you have acquired it, do the following:
Use the highest enchant spell you have available and can afford to use, this method will provide quick XP, but it will come with a considerable price tag, so make sure you’re ready to deplete your bank before taking on this method. It is entirely possible to go all the way to the finish with this method, but do make sure you can afford to do so beforehand.
The End Game 55-99
High-Level Alchemy
It is at this point (level 55) that you will unlock High-Level Alchemy, one of the most popular training methods in all of OSRS.
This spell gives players the ability to turn items into currency, this may sound exciting, but it comes with quite some planning to turn a. Profit, as this method often sees losses. If, however, you put in the planning, you can see yourself making a small return while making over 70k XP/hr.
There are a few items best known for turning a profit while using this method, though you will have to first get a good deal on them at the Grand Exchange.
- Adamant
- Runite
- Green D’Hide Bodies
Advanced Combat Spells
Though combat may seem unappealing to many at this stage, due to the cheaper options offering greater XP, there is a method still worth the effort. Using the Ancient Magicks spellbook, put into play Burst/Barrage spells. These spells are capable of targeting multiple enemies rather than one singular one, in turn significantly increasing your XP gain. We recommend starting with Ice Burst, a combat spell that is available at level 70.
