With Netflix bringing their own mobile games on their platform at a steady pace, production giant HBO did not want to let the opportunity go. Joining hands with Glow Up Games‘, they have launched their first game based on the television series Insecure. Glow Up Games, a company created by women of color has recently gained lots of plaudits for the gender and racial diversity brought into such a platform, challenging the usual norm. Hence, this comes at a great opportunity for HBO to target the African American community.

The Come Up Game
Contrasting Netflix in the deployment of the game, The Come Up Game requires the players to install the game separately from the Apple App Store. The game is obviously free to play and has lots of content and events planned throughout 2022. The players can customize their character and step into the apartment complex of Issa Dee, meet the characters in a fun, colorful rhyme and lyric mini-game. The players can follow the storyline, play minigames, rap against other characters, unlock cosmetics or even buy a house!

From what we see, the game is built to attract the new teen generation by promoting multiplayer gaming through social handles. The Come Up Game grants players the ability to “support your friends, fight gentrification, and create the culture.” The players will also enjoy “exclusive product drops” which is still a mystery to us. HBO has taken a different route towards mobile gaming from Netflix with the choice of platform. Only time will tell which of them will succeed more, even though Netflix does have a headstart with five released games already and many others in the pipeline.
